Oedipus The King
The 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic changed the world of the performing arts overnight. With stay at home orders and six foot social distancing guidelines put in place throughout the whole world, theaters everywhere postponed or cancelled their 2020/2021 seasons and shut their doors until further notice, but not Play Your Part in Seattle. They took the phrase "the show must go on" to heart, but changed it to "the show must go online."
In this classical text, the people of Thebes face a horrific plague that is causing citizens to drop dead in the streets. The only cure is for the King of Thebes, Oedipus to decipher the words of the Greek God Apollo and discover who the murderer of the former King Laius is. Little does Oedipus know that the truth has a price.
In the midst of our own plague, Play Your Part's production of Oedipus The King took to the digital stage in Summer 2020. This Ancient Greek play had to utilize 21st Century technology, which the sound design was heavily inspired by. Discovering the truth of Apollo's prophecy is the driving force of this play, to highlight these moments in the production, the sound design became a character in the show - the Greek Gods. In moments where bits and pieces of the truth are revealed through the characters' dialogue, the audience and Chorus hear blips of white noise, or the Greek Gods pushing towards the prophecy's final revelation. During the Chorus Odes, the audience can also hear the Gods solemnly singing underneath these moments, proof that they are present, but inactive until Oedipus finds out what happened to Laius. All sound effects were put into QLab, which was then routed to play audio through Zoom Audio Sharing.
